The Kindness Ninja’s mission every year is to change the world one random act of kindness at a time! We started out by leaving messages of Kindness for some of the other kindergarten classes! This was such an authentic reason for them to use the writing skills we have been learning! Some classes got candy canes with their notes and others got spice packets that smelled amazing from when we were smashing spices before the holidays!
Next, our school had a food drive for our local Food Pantry. We talked about families in need of food and how we can do something to help. These little Kindness Ninjas and their families brought in around 380 food items to help feed families in need! My student teacher helped them figure out a way to get the food items down the stairs since the boxes were so heavy. They created a ramp and had so much fun using it! This actually set the stage for an interest in force and motion and how simple machines work!
Our next random act of kindness started when the weather was getting cold. We talked about the homeless not being able to stay warm. I got in touch with an amazing organization called Blankets of Hope! We asked other classes if they wanted to join us and got 7 more classes involved! We watched a video sent to us by the founders of Blankets of Hope that walked us through the process. It started by talking about empathy and how it would feel to be homeless. The kids came up with a list: Sad, frustrated, mad, scared, lonely, hungry, cold. Next they had us write kind and encouraging words for them to lift them up and give them a reason to smile!
Next, we attached them to the blankets. These blankets were so nice, thick and warm! One of the kids said they felt like a hug.
We made to sign to show how living is giving!
“It is a Native American tradition that giving someone a blanket symbolizes kindness, honor and respect. It also represents love, security and protection.”- Blankets of Hope
Next, we boxed them up, collected the blankets from the other classes and loaded them into my car!
We collected around 150 blankets for those experiencing homelessness in our community!
I took them to a local homeless shelter and they were so happy to receive them! These kids are learning that they can do very big, important things that can help others and change our world for the better! They have such big, pure hearts and I can’t wait to see what they come up with next to change the world through random acts of kindness!
They have been expressing concern after this experience about homeless animals and are wanting to do something to help them, so I think they already have a new goal in mind!
