Nature Inspired Art (Loose Parts)

I set up a provocation for the kids to make some art with our loose parts inspired by art created by Andy Goldsworthy. I surrounded the area with photos of his work and work created by kids their age to inspire them.

We discussed how they needed to either create a plan in their head or on paper before they started. So far they have done a good job of creating a plan in their head. This is to keep them from throwing the loose parts into a random pile.  Here are some examples of what they have created.

Some are documenting what their art looks like since they can't take it home.

  1. This is a fine example of the power of natural materials and loose parts, how fascinating art can be when there's no "cookie cutter," and how you can subtly guide children toward critical thinking, reflection, and planning. I love your approach.

  2. I am so pleased that I happened upon your site! I love the idea of using an engineering technique to create things from nature! I am assuming that the children do not glue their creations, right? It is so powerful for them to then record their art on paper to take home. I cannot wait to try this--guess I'd better get busy collecting!

    1. I am so glad that you enjoy my blog! You are right, the children did not glue down their creations for this particular provocation. If I did have them glue them down, I would have had them create a plan first and then see how they stick to the plan. Sometimes I display the plan with the creations! Good luck collecting! I drive my family crazy every time we go for a hike, or the beach or a park! I am always grabbing sticks, nuts, shells, rocks...whatever I think they can use! They can all be used for math and literacy too! Best of all, they are free!!
      Sincerely,
      Darla
